About this blog

Edwin Westcott liked to journal.  He wrote his memories of growing up in Sturminster Newton and a series of articles on a wide range of topics that were important in the 1900s.

Here is his introduction to his first book.

Having recently found a real pleasure in reviving memories of bygone days in Sturminster Newton, it has occurred to me that such recollections may be of interest to some readers especially those who are acquainted with this particular district of Dorset.

Having commenced my existence in the year 1862 and then spent the first 18 years of my life in Sturminster.  I have naturally retained a great affection for the place whence I derived my birth and infant nurturing.

Present-day readers may consider many of the following details trivial or unimportant.  But as much of our local history has passed into oblivion for lack of record, as to justify an attempt to reconstruct the few fragments, which still remain.  So – may sufficient wheat be found among the chaff to repay a perusal of this somewhat disjointed narrative.

And this is the index to the second book.  Those articles will go up on this blog over the course of 2021.
